Single-line woman with red heart on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A single-line drawing of a female figure with her head tilted and one arm raised to her hair, shown in black ink on the forearm. A solid red heart fills the area over the lower torso, contrasting with the thin black outline. The plain skin and dark blue background keep the focus on the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tin of vermilion had been my mother's, and by the time I thought to open it the paint had set to a crust that I had to chip at with the back of a teaspoon. The boat was called Tern, and she had lettered that name on the cabin side herself every spring for eleven years, always with a brush and never a stencil.

She drew the way she steered, without lifting the pen. Every sketch of hers I ever saw was one unbroken line that wandered off the edge of the page and came back again, so that a face or a hand or a bridge arrived at the end of it like something she had only just noticed was there. She said that if you lifted the pen you started lying about where a thing ended.

The last sketchbook was in the bottom bunk under a coil of rope. Most pages were locks and herons. Near the back was a woman with her head tilted and one arm folded up to her hair, drawn in that same wandering line. Over her middle she had drawn a heart, outlined but left empty, the line closing round nothing. She had never filled it. I think she meant to come back to the colour.

I sat on the gunwale until the light went off the water. Then I thinned the crust with a drop of linseed in a jam jar and painted the heart in, slowly, keeping inside her line. In the morning there was fog on the cut. I took Tern through the lock with the new heart facing the towpath, and the lock keeper, who had known her, lifted his cap and said nothing at all.
