Black script quote across skin
Lettering · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of two lines of black cursive script lettering on pale skin. The text reads 'i carry your heart with me' with '(i carry it in my heart.)' beneath it. The linework is smooth and even, with uniform black ink and no shading or colour.

Don't you go looking at the sea like that, Ada, it only ever hands back what it's taken. Sit down by the range. Mrs Pellow's kettle is on, and since you've asked me twice this week I'll tell you about Frank Ansty, net-mender, who courted Lily Marsh from the chapel steps while she sang and he pretended not to listen.

When the Hesper went out in the autumn gale, Frank was aboard her. Lily kept on in this same front room with her wages and a box of writing paper, because the post was the only thing that came up the hill that winter she still wanted. Every letter she sent him ended the same way. She'd write, i carry your heart with me, and then, in brackets, as if she couldn't help correcting herself, (i carry it in my heart.) She ran the lines together like a woman in a hurry to be finished.
Nobody ever sent a reply. Then in the spring the carrier brought a parcel addressed to her in Frank's hand, though Frank had been under the Hesper's wreck since October. Inside was the tin he kept his tackle in, and on the lid, scratched with a nail, were the same words in the same brackets. The lid had been there all along, waiting for someone to read it.
She kept that tin on the sill facing the harbour, and every night she turned it so the words faced the water. Put another log on, girl, and mind the draught from the door.
