Reaching hands with orbit circles on upper back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two hands almost touching, drawn in fine line with stippled shading, set over a faint dotted sun and concentric dotted orbit rings. A crescent moon sits above the central design and a small ringed planet sits below. The piece is entirely black and grey on pale skin, centred on the upper back with the neck visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sun came down to the Kessock dance hall on the last Saturday of harvest, when the boards were still warm from the day and the lamps had been lit early. Nobody invited her. She simply sat by the door in a dress the colour of wet slate, and the fiddler, Tam Orr, who had played for forty years and never once lost his place, missed a bar.

She asked for a reel. Tam said the hall had only one partner for reels, and that was the moon, who was out on the step smoking a clay pipe and pretending not to watch. The moon came in with his collar turned up and the dust of the lane on his shoes. They danced anyway, and the rings of light they threw across the ceiling went round and round like the dotted lines a surveyor draws before he knows where the road will go.

Near midnight the planet, a small ringed thing who had hitched a ride from the south field, tugged at the hem of the sun's dress and said she was wanted home. The sun did not stop. She put one hand out across the floor, and the moon put his out to meet it, and the space between their fingers was so narrow that the whole hall went quiet to watch it close. Nobody knows whether they touched. Tam swore they did not, and that was why he kept playing, so the gap would stay a gap until the dawn came up grey over the hill.

By morning the boards were swept, the lamps were out, and the moon was back on his step. Tam says the reel they danced is still the one he plays, and it has no last bar, only a turn that goes on being almost a finish.
