The mate had tied the bow himself, the morning the Marguerite cleared the Mersey, because his daughter had asked him to and because nobody aboard could refuse him anything after eleven weeks of salt pork. Harriet Quayle watched the ribbon catch the wind on the foredeck and thought it looked foolish, the way a good thing looks foolish before it has earned its keep. Now the anchor was up and stowed, the cable was dripping on the windlass, and the bow had gone soft and grey with spray.

They were four hundred miles out of the Azores when the squall came down from the north-west like a dropped slate. Harriet was on the wheel with the lamp swinging behind her, and the young cook was bailing the galley with a pot. The mate came up the companionway with his oilskins streaming and stood beside her without speaking, which was how she knew he was frightened. He gripped the rail, looked at the black water and said only, "Keep her head to it."
She kept her head to it. By dawn the sea had gone flat and pale as pewter, the sails hung like wet washing, and the ribbon on the anchor was gone, torn away somewhere in the night. Nobody mentioned it. The mate scratched a line on the slate in the chart room and wrote the wind, the course and the word holding, and then, underneath, in a smaller hand, a single word: bow.
