Three birds in flight on the inner wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is held up against dark green foliage, showing three small black bird silhouettes in flight across the inner wrist. The linework is thin and the birds are solid black with no visible shading. The image has a warm, slightly faded colour tone, and the teal nail polish and silver bracelet are the only other notable colours.

Sit nearer, the wind off the moor gets into old bones and older tales. Do you see the broken tower there, with the sky showing through its top? Three swallows nested in its arrow slit every spring while Lady Maud still kept the roof sound. Her steward, Tobias Crane, swore they were the castle's luck, and when the last hall fell in the great rain, he went round the courtyard with a bucket of lime, filling every crack the birds had used.

The swallows cared nothing for luck or lime. Each September they rose off the tower together, three dark shapes stitched against the clouds, and each April they came back to the same slit as if the stones still had a roof over them. Tobias grew stooped watching from the gatehouse. He counted them the way other men count coins, and he never once saw a fourth bird join them.

The year he died, the swallows went south without him. The village boys say the birds circled the keep three times before they climbed out of sight, though boys always say such things. What was found in the grass that spring was a bucket of lime gone hard as bone, and beside it, scratched into the mortar of the arrow slit, three small birds drawn in a row, with a tally beneath them that stopped at three.
