Small sailboat on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small sailboat is tattooed on the inside of a wrist, drawn with thin outlines for the sail and a solid dark hull. The linework is simple and clean, with no shading, and the ink is black. The photograph is greyscale and frames the wrist close up, with a leather bracelet and a silver chain bracelet above the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The dinghy went back in the water on Saturday, though not the way you'd have wanted. Mr Hollis from the boatyard had her on the slip by seven, and the tide was making, so I stood on the wall in my good coat and watched the gulls fight over a chip paper while Dad worked the mooring line free of the old tyre it had snagged on. Nobody said anything about you. That was the kindness of it.

Mum found your sail ties in the drawer under the tea towels. Three of them, still knotted at one end the way you always tied them off so they wouldn't fray. I put them in my pocket and forgot until the wind caught the rigging and I felt them knock against my hip. I'm not sure what I'm trying to tell you. Only that the hull is dark again, we gave it a coat of the grey paint you liked, and the pennant is back at the masthead.

Pip, the girl from the chandlers, asked whether we'd be taking her out to the buoy. I said perhaps in spring. She looked at me as if I were a fool, and maybe I am, but I tacked her out past the harbour wall anyway, just to the edge where the chop starts, and turned her round before the light went.

Write when you can. Tell me the ferry is warm and the crossings are calm.

Love, Nell
