Small outline heart tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart outline is tattooed on the inner forearm, drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading. The forearm rests in a cream knitted sleeve, and a layered pearl bracelet with a dark cord and a metal charm sits beside the tattoo. The soft focus and warm tones give the composition a muted, intimate feel, with the tattoo placed off centre on the left.

At ten to three the ward at St Aidan's went quiet in the way Nell had learned to distrust. The monitors kept up their small arithmetic. In bay four, Mr Pruett had been asking for his pocket watch since midnight, and she had promised it would turn up in the morning, a lie she only told to men who would not remember asking.

The lost property bag was a grey plastic sack under the nurses' station, and she tipped it out on the desk because she needed something to do with her hands. Two biros, a single slipper, a comb with three teeth missing. Then a discharge leaflet that someone had written on the back of, a heart drawn in one thin, careful line, no shading, the loop at the top closing neatly where the pen had gone back over itself. A child's drawing, or a tired adult's, she couldn't tell. Nobody had signed it.

She took the leaflet to bay four anyway. Mr Pruett's hand was already under his pillow, and when he brought it out the watch was ticking, its chain pooled on the blanket like spilt water. 'Edie drew those on my sandwich bags,' he said, not looking at her. 'Every morning for forty years. Never once with a ruler.'

Nell sat on the edge of the bed until the four o'clock obs were due. Then she clicked her biro, turned the chart over, and drew a heart beside the blood pressure column, one unbroken line, and held it up for him to see. He laughed, a short creaking sound, and the monitor above them let out a single bright beep that neither of them looked at.
