Anchor, bird and script on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black anchor sits on the inner wrist, with a dotted line curving around it and a small bird silhouette at the upper right. A short script word appears beside the anchor's shank. The linework is thin and the ink is solid black with no colour, shown against a dark background that makes the design stand out.

The pigeon came in on the morning tide, wet to the bone, a twist of oilskin tied to its leg with fishing line. Maud knew the band before she read it, because Tom had painted the same little anchor on every loft door he ever built. She sat on the harbour wall with the bird cupped in her apron and read the note standing up, the way she read everything from him.

He had written only three words, and the ink had run where the rain got in. Beneath them he had drawn a dotted line curving round the anchor, which meant the Harriet was off the Lizard and making for home. He never wrote about the weather. He drew the route instead, as if the sea could be trusted to follow a pencil if he was careful enough.
She climbed the stairs to the loft above the chandlery, where the other birds shifted in their straw. Ellis, who had kept homers since before the war, watched her fix a fresh strip of paper to the band. "He'll be fine," he said, not looking up. "Birds don't lie. Men do, but birds don't."
Maud wrote back one line and tied it on. Then she went down to the wall and watched the bird circle above the bay, a small dark shape against the grey, until the first boats rounded the point and she could finally make out the Harriet's mast.
