Matching anchor tattoos on two hands
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two clenched fists are pressed together against a dark background, each showing a small black anchor tattoo on the side of the hand. The anchors have simple, thin outlines with solid black fills and a small ring at the top. The photograph is in black and white, with soft lighting that keeps the focus on the tattoos and the knuckles.

The lift in Kinnaird House had been broken since February, so Dev and I climbed the eleven flights every night with a bag of chips between us, arguing about whether Largs counted as the sea. He said it did. I said it was a car park with ambitions. We were seventeen and thought the argument mattered more than the stairwell smell or the pigeons nesting in the bin cupboard on nine.

The anchors were my idea, and his, and nobody else's. We sat on the wall by the bins with a biro and a sheet of Dev's mum's ironing paper, drawing the same anchor over and over until the ring at the top came out the same size on both. Then his cousin Robbie, who had a machine in a shed in Cumbernauld and a lot of unearned confidence, inked them on with a steady hand while we sipped Irn-Bru to stop ourselves fainting. I still think of them as a promise rather than a picture. An anchor is the thing that stops a boat drifting in weather, and we both had plenty of weather to be getting on with.
In June Dev's dad got a job in Leeds and the flat was emptied in a single Saturday. On the last night the lift was finally fixed, with a laminated sign taped to its doors. We took the stairs anyway, out of habit, and on the eleventh landing we stopped and pressed our fists together, knuckle to knuckle, the way we always did to say see you tomorrow. The anchors lined up in the stairwell light. Neither of us said that Leeds was a lot further than Largs.
