Anchor, compass and key on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic anchor sits diagonally across the image, with a round compass and a tall rod crossing behind it. A small ornate key hangs from the rod on the left. The tattoo uses smooth black and grey shading with highlights on the metal, and the compass face has fine tick marks and hands.

The anchor came up out of the mud at the bottom of the lower field the morning after the big tide. Dad said it was no use to anyone and I should leave it where it lay, but I borrowed the grey pony and a sledge and dragged it up the bank regardless. For the whole of January it sat by the water trough with frost on its flukes, and the ewes gave it a wide berth.

The compass turned up in February, wrapped in a feed sack at the bottom of the barley bin. The glass was cracked across the face, but the needle still shivered when I tipped it. It never once pointed north. It pointed at the lane gate every time, as if it had opinions about where the cattle ought to go, and I stopped arguing with it by the second week.
The little key was tied to the anchor's shank with baling twine, and it fitted nothing I owned. I tried the granary padlock, the parlour chest, the Land Rover's glovebox and Mum's old Bible box. Nothing. It wasn't until the thaw that I dragged the spare ladder into the loft and found a brass-cornered box under forty years of hay, and the key turned with a click like a held breath.
Inside were my grandfather's letters from the merchant ships, every one addressed to a farm he never once came back to. I read them aloud to the pony in the yard until my voice gave out. Then I hung the compass on the gate post, facing the lane, and left the anchor where it lay, letting the needle point wherever it liked.
