Black and grey tattoo of an anchor with the word family in script running down its shaft, placed on the lower leg.

Anchor with family script on the lower leg

Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black anchor with a ring at the top and a crossbar sits on the skin, with the word family written in a flowing script along the shaft. The anchor is filled with dense black ink and the script is thinner, giving clear contrast against the pale skin. The photograph is in greyscale and frames the tattoo centrally against a dark background.

Dear Tamsin,

The tether crew finally brought the anchor line in last night, after eleven days of the ring drifting off the lee side of Callisto's dust field. The old men said the mooring would never hold again once the cable frayed. They were wrong, though not by much. It held, with a shudder that rattled every cup in the galley and sent Peder swearing down the spine corridor.

I have been thinking about the iron we kept in the chapel at Harrow Deep, the one with the ring at the top and the crossbar like a pair of outstretched arms. Grandad kept a painted one above the hatch of his bunk, and the word running down its shaft was the one he used to say when the current tried to take us. He told me once that the crew at the bottom of the gravity well painted anchors on their mess walls so nobody forgot which way was home.

Hold fast, then. The line is singing a little tonight, the way it does when the moon pulls. I am sleeping in the cargo bay where the hum is loudest, because it is the only place I can hear the station settle around me.

Come for the solstice. Bring the boys. There is room on the lee side now.

Your loving Nan, Ysolde
