Small anchor tattoo on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black anchor tattoo sits on the side of an ankle, with its shank and flukes drawn in simple outline. A small heart shape forms the ring at the top of the anchor. The ink is black on warm skin, and the grey canvas shoe fills the lower part of the frame.

Mind the rope, that's a good lad, sit where the tar bucket can't reach you. You want the anchor story, then you'll have to take the rain with it, because it's wet out past the breakwater and always has been. Her name was Merryn Coad and she kept the light at Scarrow Holm for eleven winters before the Trinity men decided one light was enough for the whole sound. She had a heart drawn over the ring of her grandfather's anchor, a small black thing he'd cut into the lead of his own paperwork as a joke, and she said that was the only honest bit of sailing in the family.

The spring the lamp went out, she walked the shingle every evening with a tin of oil and a boot full of sand, looking for the tide-line, because a dead man's dinghy had come in with its painter still tied to a ring bolt. Nobody on the mainland would say whose boat it was. I said it was Tobias Wren's, and she said Tobias Wren had never once tied a knot he didn't brag about, so no.

She found the other half of the story on the eleventh night, tangled in a ferry net off the north slip: a second painter, cut clean, and a slip of paper rolled tight in a cork. It read only, in pencil, hold the light for me. She went out on the last boat before the storm, hung the anchor from the stern, and kept the lamp burning until morning.

The Trinity men still pass the holm and they never ask who keeps the lamp now. You can see it from the pier on a clear night, low and steady, and if you're daft enough to row out, you'll find a grey canvas shoe on the step, filled with sand, and nobody home.
