Small anchor tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small anchor tattoo sits on the side of an ankle, with a vertical shaft, a ring at the top and a curved base. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with dashed lines suggesting rope wrapped around the shank. The tattoo is centred on smooth, pale skin against a dark fabric edge on the left.

Sit in, sit in, the fire's only warm on the side you're sitting on. Now. You'll have heard of Harrowmere, the kingdom that drowned politely the year the Queen's kettle boiled dry. No? Then listen, because this is the rope-maker's tale, and she's the one who taught me to tell it slow.

Iseult Vane was a rope-maker's girl on the cold quay at Scarrow. Her father took the herring boats out one March to bring them home before the squall, and the squall took him and his small black anchor both. Nobody had the heart to dredge for it. So Iseult fetched a coil of hemp from the back of her father's shed and began each morning to draw an anchor in the wet sand with a stick, and each morning she wound one turn of rope around its shank, one turn for every day he had been gone.

The harbourmaster said the rope must be bound tight, or the sea would read it as a request and come asking for more. Iseult bound it loose. She left a gap between every turn, a stitch of air at each pass, so the sea could look straight through the lines and see there was nothing left to hold. On the forty-first morning the tide came up the beach, smoothed the sand flat, and carried the loose rope out past the Gullet, every turn of it.

When the water went down again, the sand held only a neat row of small holes where the rope had been, and a grey gull sat on the ring at the top of the anchor for the rest of the afternoon. Nobody shooed it off. Iseult swept the quay and went home for her supper.
