Anchor and scripture reference on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black anchor with a ring at the top and a curved stock sits above a small heart and the script text Hebrews 6:19. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the lettering is a flowing cursive. The tattoo is shown in colour-neutral skin tones against a cream carpet, with the foot angled across the frame.

Dear Nell, The wind went round to the south-west on Tuesday and stayed there, and Dad took the Morwenna out regardless because the pots don't empty themselves. You'll laugh, but I kept saying the verse Mrs Trewin read on Sunday over in my head, about hope being an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast. I never understood it until I stood there with my hands in my apron pocket going numb.

He came in at dusk with the bow low and the chain singing. The anchor had dragged twice in the night, he said, and only bit when he let out the last of the rope, every fathom of it, and then he sat in the wheelhouse for a quarter of an hour without moving. Nobody asked him anything. Young Tom from the chandlery brought him tea in the chipped enamel mug with the blue rim, and Dad held it in both hands as if someone might take it off him.
This morning the old anchor was lying on the quay, scraped clean, and he had me help him scrub the shackle with sand. He wants it painted before the regatta. I told him it was nothing to paint, only a lump of iron that stayed put. He said that was rather the point of it, winked, and went off whistling the way he does when he has decided something. Come home at Michaelmas if you can. The kettle's waiting, and so is the anchor.
