Small anchor tattoo on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black anchor sits on the outer upper arm of a man whose face is not shown. The linework is simple and even, with the shank, crossbar and flukes filled in with dark ink. The photograph is black and white, and the arm is crossed over the chest against a grey t-shirt printed with line drawings of faces.

The Bramley rows were already stripped by the third week of August, so Dad sent me up the top field with a bucket and the old ladder that wobbled on its left leg. Nobody else wanted the top field. From up there you could see the river bend and the church tower at Kingsland, and the wind came straight off the hill with nothing to stop it.

The storm came on a Tuesday, the sky the colour of wet slate. Uncle Ray had pegged the netting down with iron weights, rusted things shaped like anchors that he'd hauled out of a lock-keeper's cottage years before. He said a wind that size could lift a bare tree out of its hole, and the only answer was to make the orchard heavier than the weather. I held the tail of the net while he hammered the last stake in, and the windfalls rattled against the wire like teeth.

When it passed, most of the Discovery trees had lost nothing but leaves. Two lay flat in the next field, their roots bare and pale as bone. Ray walked the line with his hands in his pockets and said nothing for a long time. Then he kicked one of the anchors, hard, and said it had earned its keep.

I kept one of those weights after the harvest. It sits on my windowsill now, black with oil, and every August when the wind gets up I hear the wire ring and reach for a stake before I've thought about it.
