Black line drawing of the word love in script lettering, with a heart before it and an anchor replacing the v, on a white background.

Script love with heart and anchor

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black design showing a small heart followed by the script letters l and o, a solid black anchor in place of the next letter, and a final script e. The linework is fine and even, with the anchor filled in solid black for contrast. The design is isolated on a plain white background with no skin or body visible.

Dear Tom,

The ward has gone quiet the way it only does around four, when the trolleys stop rattling and even the monitors seem to have agreed to keep their voices down. I am writing this at the end of the nurses' station on the back of a drug chart, because my notebook is somewhere under a pile of blue gloves and I have stopped looking for it.

Mrs Okafor in bay three asked for you tonight. She thought I was you, which I took as a compliment, since you are the only man I know who can talk a frightened woman into taking her tablets. I told her you were on a ship somewhere past Cape Finisterre and would send a postcard with a lighthouse on it. She laughed, and then she slept, and I have decided that counts as a good shift.

Dr Pryce came round with the bloods at half three and said the anchor picture in the day room was crooked again. Some child drew it at Christmas and the paper has yellowed at one corner. I straightened it anyway, the way you used to straighten the frames in our flat before anyone was allowed to visit.

I will be home by eight, with the sun coming up over the harbour wall. Keep the kettle warm. Hold fast out there, the way you always say, and I will hold fast here.

Love, Jo
