Anchor with pink and blue roses
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A bold black anchor runs down the centre of the image, with its shank wrapped in pink and blue roses, pink blossoms and green leaves. The anchor is rendered in solid black ink with brushy, textured edges, while the flowers are painted in soft pink, blue and green tones. The design sits centred on a plain white background with no body part shown.

The old porter at Saint Brannoc's told it to Nell Harker on her first night shift, somewhere between the bells of Ward Four and the cold tea in the staff room. Down at Gull Point, he said, a fisherman's anchor came up out of the mud with roses wound round its shank, pink and blue, though no rose had ever grown on that shore. The fisherman had lost two sons to the same tide, so he carried the anchor home and hung it in his hall.

Every night after, the roses opened a little further, until by spring the whole iron was dressed in them. Folk came to see it and went away quieter. The fisherman's wife said the flowers were only the sea's way of keeping a ship from drifting, because a thing held fast can still bloom. Nobody at Gull Point argued with her, and nobody argued with the anchor either, since it had never once let a boat go astray in the big gales.
Nell worked the long corridor that winter with the anchor in her mind. When a man in bed nine woke at three shouting for his daughter, she sat with him until the hand on his chest went still and easy. When a child on Four would not settle, she hummed the slow tune the porter had taught her, the way a tide turns. Some nights nothing came of it but the rain against the glass.
In April the porter retired and left her his locker key. Inside the door, painted in black with brushy edges, was a small anchor wrapped in roses. She did not ask him where it came from. She hung her coat beside it and went back out to the wards, where the lights were low and someone always needed holding fast.
