The rope had been Maud's idea, not the cook's, and Tobias never let her forget it. Every Sunday she came down the companionway with the bread tin under one arm and a palm full of marrow bones, and every Sunday he was already at the stove, scowling at the kettle as though it had insulted his mother. The galley of the Seven Sisters was no bigger than a wardrobe. Two people turning round in it was a dance, and they had been dancing it for eleven years.

That morning the swell came up sharp off the Dogger Bank and the pans began their slow argument on the hooks. Tobias burned the first batch of cakes and blamed the stove. Maud said nothing, only fished the tin of dried rose petals from the locker where she kept her sewing and pressed a pinch into the dough, the way her gran had done in a kitchen in Whitby with a view of nothing but fog. He pretended not to see. He always did.

When the cakes came out, sweet and a little scorched, he set one on the chart table beside the brass anchor badge he had polished for the men who never came back, and Maud saw him stand a moment with his hand flat on the wood. Then he tore the cake in two and gave her the bigger half, which was the nearest he had ever come to saying anything at all.
