Anchor with roses and rope
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
A drawn anchor sits upright with a coiled rope wrapped around its shaft, and a cluster of pink and peach roses with teal foliage climbs up one side. The anchor is outlined in dark, fine linework with some hatched shading, while the flowers are rendered in soft, muted colour. The design is centred on a plain cream background.

The tide had left the anchor wedged between two rocks below Corvell Castle, its shank furred with weed, and Tamsin had to kneel in the wet to see the rose scratched beside its ring. Nobody in Porthgwidden believed the old lord's wife had planted the roses on the seaward wall, but the stems still climbed the broken keep every June, pink and peach against the grey stone, as though nobody had told them the house was finished.

Her brother Owen fed the rope out from the skiff while she worked the iron loose with a crowbar and a prayer her grandmother would have scolded her for. Their father had warned them that anything taken from under a castle belonged to the castle. Owen laughed and said the castle had nothing left to claim, and the tide heaved the anchor clear so suddenly that both of them went down in the shallows and came up swearing and salt-blind.
Beneath the crust of barnacles, on the cross-bar, someone had cut the initials E.R. and a date in 1791, and under them a short line of letters Tamsin had to scrape clean with her thumbnail. It was a single instruction: keep the roses, and keep the anchor down. A lighthouse keeper at Pendrask later told them the lord had ordered his ship to sail for the war that spring, and that his wife had sunk the anchor herself so the vessel could not leave without her.
They hung the anchor on the gatepost that evening, the rope coiled twice round the shaft, and in the morning a bud had split open on the wall above it, peach at the centre, the colour of the sky before rain.
