Nobody on the night shift at Gullwick Cottage Hospital liked the far corridor, so when the new porter, Tomas Reddy, asked for it he was given the keys and a look. He pushed the trolley past the sealed linen room and the chapel with its one stained window, and he counted doors out loud the way his grandmother had taught him to count fish boxes.

The old ward sister used to say the sea gave back what it took, and the sea had taken Tomas's father off the Dunmore pier forty years before. Nobody had told him the rest of the saying, which was that you had to hold the rope while it did the giving. So each night when the bell rang from bed nine, he went. Sometimes it was a wet cough, sometimes a woman who wanted to know the time, once a boy who only wanted someone to sit while the lights hummed.
On the third Tuesday of February the bell from bed nine did not ring. Tomas went anyway and found the old fisherman, Owen Trask, awake and sitting straight, his hand flat on the blanket as if he were feeling for a seam. "The anchor's still down," Owen said. "Can you feel her pulling?" Tomas sat down, laid his palm beside the old man's, and they waited until the window went from black to grey.
When the day nurse came in at seven, Tomas was asleep in the plastic chair, and Owen was holding the cord of the bell in his fist, very still, like a man who had got a boat safely to its mooring.
