The stove in the back room has gone out again. I have stopped trying to light it myself because the matches are damp and I refuse to ask the Pryces for help. Mrs Pryce keeps asking after you, and I keep telling her you are in Plymouth learning to be a proper nurse, which is what you wrote in your last letter, so I hope it is true.

Enclosed is the little brass anchor from the tin on the dresser. You left it behind with a note saying it was bad luck to keep a thing that belonged to the sea. I have decided the sea can wait for it. I have pressed it into the wax of this envelope so you will know it is from me, and I have drawn a small heart on the other side the way you used to draw them on the back of my hand when we were children.

The lighthouse will be lit by six. If the wind holds from the west, I expect the Mary Kell will be in harbour before the bells. Look for the lamp, and if you see it, know that someone at the end of the pier is looking back.
