The Thursday the new registrar arrived, a lad from Bristol with a small silver cross on a chain under his scrubs, he asked her what the squiggles meant. She showed him the trace of a man from ward four, how it leapt, dropped and leapt again, the way a dog runs at a gate. Then she told him the best trace was the one that looked like someone had stopped to catch their breath and decided to carry on.

Dennis collected her from the bus stop that evening in the old estate, and they drove past St Mary's, where the bells were practising for a Saturday wedding. Ruth counted the rings between the pauses. He asked what she was thinking. She said she was thinking the bride would have a steady pulse, which was more than most brides could claim.

On Saturday she sat near the back and watched the vicar's hands hold the rings, and when the couple turned to face the room her own heart did what it always did at the top of a rise, a little lurch, then the long, sure fall back down. She pressed her palm flat on her handbag and kept it there until the organ started.
