The ewe had been down since before light, and by the time Dad and I got the lamb out of her the snow had filled the yard to the top of the gate. We rubbed the little thing with straw in the corner by the lamp while Mam hammered the kettle on the range up at the house, and the wind kept pushing the barn door against its bolt as though somebody wanted in.

Under the feed bin I found an owl feather, grey-brown and pale at the tip, frozen stiff to a scrap of hessian. I turned it over and Dad saw me looking. He said the barn owl had roosted in the rafters since the summer Uncle Tom went off to the coast, and that it was a good sign when they stayed through a hard January. He didn't say anything else about Tom. He never did, except that the old grey mare had been called Lovely and the swallows had nested over the door every year without fail.
We pinned the feather to the beam above the lamb's pen with a rusted nail. Later, while Dad wrote the lambing tally on the board by the door, I saw him stop at the bottom and add two words in his careful capitals, then loop a line between them the way he signs the feed receipts, round and back and round again. The lamb got to its feet on the third try, wobbling like a folded deckchair, and the snow ticked against the window while we watched it find the teat.
