Animal skull and purple rose

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A small mammal skull, shown in profile, sits in front of a cluster of purple roses with green leaves and yellow-orange highlights. Bold black outlines define the skull, petals and foliage, with soft shading on the bone and petals. The design fills a roughly square area, with the skull as the clear focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell found the skull in the bottom barn the week the thaw came off the ditches, tucked behind a split feed sack where the cats never bothered to sleep. It was small enough to sit in her palm, the jaw still hinged on one side, the eye sockets dark as wet slate. Her brother said it was a fox, then a stoat, then nothing worth keeping. She boiled it in the outhouse copper with a handful of washing soda and carried it in on a saucer.

Her mother's rose still climbed the south wall of the farmhouse, a purple climber nobody could name, which had flowered through three hard frosts out of pure stubbornness. Every morning in December Nell went out with the secateurs and came back with cold fingers and another armful of heads, their petals edged with brown. She laid them round the skull on the kitchen table like a wreath for someone who had not yet been told. Her brother called it morbid. Her father said nothing and ate his toast standing up, watching her hands.

By the second week of January the petals had gone soft and the room smelled of wet earth and sweet rot. Nell wrapped the skull in the blue cloth her mother used for bread, walked it down to the ditch where it had come from, and set it on the bank among the sedge. The frost had already taken the last of the roses. She stood a while, then walked back up the lane with her hands in her pockets and found, tucked in the gatepost, one late bud the colour of a bruise, still closed tight against the cold.
