Fox and roses on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A fox head in profile faces right, with shaded grey fur, a pink-tinted muzzle and a detailed eye, set among pink roses, purple bell-shaped flowers and grey leaves. The fox and flowers use solid colour, while the leaves and fine whisker lines are in black and grey shading. The design wraps down the outer thigh, with the flowers balancing the fox's head.

Nell had been told the fox was called Juniper, a name the last owner had invented so the crowds would pay a penny more to look at it. The fair had set up on the water meadow outside Harrowgate, and by the second week the rides had gone sticky with cider and rain. Nell mended the lamps on the dodgem track and kept an eye on the caravan with green shutters, where the animal lived in a crate lined with somebody's old rugs.

On the third evening the crate was open and the fox was gone. Nell found the latch undone and a single bellflower, crushed and purple, lying on the step. Her uncle Ray, who ran the coconut shy and had never once been sober after six, swore it had been stolen. She did not argue. She took a storm lantern and went along the hedgerow behind the cattle pens, past the sweet peas someone had tied to the fence, listening for the particular silence a fox leaves behind.
She found it under the wagon of the bearded lady's tent, lying on a bed of wild roses that had blown in from the ditch. Its eyes caught the lamplight, sharp and amber, and it regarded her the way the fairground folk regarded a ticket collector: measuring, not yet decided. Nell sat down in the wet grass and took off her cardigan, laying it between them. She said nothing about crates or money or the gate fee. She only waited.
By dawn the fox was asleep on the cardigan and Nell had a bruise on her palm from gripping the lantern too hard. When Ray came looking she told him the animal had only wanted a corner of the field to itself. He grumbled, then handed her the key without being asked. The crate stayed open after that, and nobody charged for the view.
