Animated red-haired character with quote
Lettering · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a stylised, animated young woman with voluminous flame-red hair and large blue eyes, her hair blending into swirling orange and red flame shapes. Black serif lettering with some teal and green accents reads "If you had a chance to change your fate would you?" across the design, and part of the lettering is partly obscured by the hair. The photo is taken straight on against a dark background, with the cylindrical limb filling the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Nell Harrow's hair burned the colour of a kiln, and on the night the bells of St Ebbe's rang thirteen she sat on the wet steps of the fish market with a bridge keeper's coin in her fist. He had given it to her for one question. The trouble was that she had already wasted one question on a wish, and the tide was climbing the steps.

Her grandmother had taught her the old rule: a fate is a rope someone else has tied, and you can only cut it if you know whose hands hold the other end. So Nell walked the length of Gullet Street with the coin turning over her knuckles, past the shuttered chandlers and a cat asleep on the baker's grating, until she reached the iron bridge where the keeper waited with his lantern unlit.
'Ask it, then,' he said. She asked whether she could go back to the morning her father sailed, and he laughed, a sound like a gate in wind, and told her that was a wish, and wishes were sold by the pound at the chapel. So she asked what she had really wanted to know. Would she still take the road that brought her here, if she could see the whole of it? He lit the lantern. Its flame was red, and it leaned towards her the way a dog leans into a hand.
'Yes,' she said. The coin went cold, then warm, and the keeper was gone with his lantern and his gate-hinge laugh. Morning found her on the steps with soaked boots and a mouth that tasted of smoke. A fishwife looked at her hair and said she had clearly been out all night. She had, and she knew now which hands held the rope, and that she had chosen to keep holding it anyway.
