Puzzle-piece butterfly with script lettering

Lettering · Colour · Photo

A butterfly with black outlined wings, each filled with a multicoloured pattern of interlocking puzzle pieces in red, orange, yellow, green, teal and purple. Black script reading I Will Fight sits above the wings and Your Fight sits below, both with clean, bold outlines. The design is centred on pale skin with a glossy, slightly reflective surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jigsaw came into the lost-property office in a shoebox taped shut, nine hundred and twelve pieces out of a thousand, and Nell tipped the lot onto the counter as if it owed her money. I had sorted things nobody claimed for eleven years on the night shift in Sheffield, and I knew the look of a box that had been opened too many times by hopeful hands.

We worked through the rain that week with the bus lights sliding across the ceiling. The sky was the easy part, a clean wash of blue at the edges. The wings were harder. Every piece was a little island of colour, red and orange and a teal that shifted to green when you tilted it under the lamp. Nell wouldn't let me force a single one. Her brother had started this puzzle, she said, and his rule had been that a piece either finds its place or it waits for the next person who needs it.

On Thursday the butterfly was whole except for a gap near the lower wing, a patch of yellow and violet. I had given up and was reaching for my tea when Nell stood, pulled her coat off the hook, and ran her thumb along the hem. There was a small stiff click, and a single puzzle piece dropped into her palm, warm from being carried against her body all week.

She set it in the gap without looking. The wing caught the lamplight, every colour wet and bright like paint still drying, and neither of us said anything for a long while. Outside, the last bus pulled away towards the ring road, and the shop was quiet except for the sound of two hands resting on a table.
