Anime girl in goggles and roses on a full sleeve
Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A shirtless man is shown from the side with a full colour sleeve covering his upper arm and forearm. The central motif is a large-eyed, anime-style girl wearing aviator goggles, surrounded by red roses, a star and a hand gesture. Bold black outlines and saturated red, yellow, teal and purple fills give the sleeve a bright, flat, graphic finish against a dark background.

Dear Ray,

The 6.14 came in this morning with its brakes singing, and I thought of you straight away, the way you used to lean out of the carriage window at Cold Harrow with your goggles pushed up on your forehead like a pair of owl eyes. Mrs Abernethy is still selling the same rock cakes from the tin by the urn. Nobody has bought one yet, but she says it's only a matter of time.
Your last postcard came from the aerodrome at Wickhurst. You wrote that your instructor thinks you fly like a pickpocket, all hands and no fuss. I've pinned it up beside the kiosk clock where the porters can read it. Stan from the goods yard now calls you the Girl on the Sleeve, which you'd hate, and which is why I'm telling you.
Yesterday a man in a grey overcoat left a brown paper parcel at the counter and asked me to see it reached you. He'd had it since spring, he said, from lost property at Dunmere. Inside were your other goggles, the ones with the red rubber straps that you swore you'd lost in the Thames, and a pressed rose from Gran's back wall wrapped in a page of the Gazette. No note. I didn't open the rose. I just sat with it for a while, listening to the signal bell.
Come home for the roses. The 6.14 leaves Wickhurst at nine tomorrow, and I'll be on the platform with the kettle on, watching every carriage door until one of them opens and it's you, squinting at the sky as if it owes you money. Bring your own goggles this time. I'm keeping these.
Love, Lou
