Anime portrait with crows on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A black and grey anime-style portrait of a character with a headband and dark hair fills the upper arm, with crows drawn in flight above the head. Below the figure sits a red and black circular emblem framed by bold black tribal-style patterns. Soft grey shading gives the face and clothing depth, and the red accents draw the eye to the central emblem against the lighter skin.

Night staff get used to odd things. Dolores on the desk swears the birds know the bed count before the registrar does. I don't believe her, but I do leave the window latch off for them now, which is more than I'd admit to the sister.
Last Tuesday, in bed four, a lad of about nineteen with no family asked if I could draw him something he could hold in his head while the lights were dimmed. I've no talent with a pencil, so I sketched what I remembered from the poster on his locker: a young man with a plain, tired face, a red ring at the centre of one eye, and birds lifting behind him like smoke. He said I'd got the eyes wrong, they should be darker. He wasn't wrong.
At four this morning the crows rose from the gutter all at once, and the monitor by bed four settled into a long, level line. I wrote the time on the back of the drawing, 04:12, and I'm enclosing it so you can see my handwriting shake. I'm not saying the birds did anything. I'm saying they knew when to leave.
