Two figures in black and grey on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two figures, one with dark hair in profile on the left and one facing forward on the right, set against a dark, sweeping background. The linework is loose and brushlike, with soft shading that fades into streaks at the edges. The composition is tightly centred and fills the frame, and the image is in black and grey with no colour ink.

Mind the fire, the last of the wood is damp and it will spit. Now listen. The river at Halden was not wide that winter, but it was black, and the black lifted off the water in strips like wet sheets torn from a line. Marta knew the crossing by sound alone. She knew where the reeds gave way to stones, and she knew the guard's lantern would swing twice before it came near the bank.

Ilse walked half a step behind her, face turned to the water as if she could read a message written on it. She carried nothing. Marta carried the boy, though by the second mile he had stopped being a weight and become only a warmth pressed against her ribs, the kind of warmth you do not dare shift in case it leaves.
The lantern came round the bend and stopped. "Papers," said the guard, a young man with a red nose and a rifle slung wrong. Marta had none, so she held out the coin the ferryman had taken for his trouble. The guard did not look at it. He was looking past her, at Ilse, who lifted her chin and said their mother's name clearly, the way you would call a child in from the yard. The lantern dropped. He muttered something about the cold and turned his back to light his pipe.
In the flare of the match Marta saw her sister's profile sharp against the dark, and the boy's small hand open on her shoulder. Then the boat knocked the stones and they were across, and the bank swallowed the light behind them. So when you look at a picture of two women with the wet dark rising around them, remember which one is facing you. That one was always going to be the one who spoke. Those sparks are coming for the rug, so move your feet.
