Anime-style face in profile with brush shading

Black and grey · Photo

A stylised female face in side profile, drawn with large-eyed anime features and loose hair strokes sweeping back across the top of the design. The linework is soft and tapered, with dark brushlike shading under the chin, along the neck and across a band of hair and clothing at the lower right. The image is in black and grey on a light skin tone, with the design filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody had told Gemma Pryce that the reunion was in the sports hall, so she came in late, wet from the rain, and stood by the trestle table scanning the room for someone she had once promised to meet at the bus stop. That someone was me. We had been fourteen, drawing faces in the back of geography, and Gemma had a habit of sketching hair as though it were always caught in a gale.

Back then she drew one girl over and over, a profile with huge careful eyes and strands streaming back off the forehead as if the wind had got into the page. Mr Caldicott confiscated her exercise book in March and read a page aloud to the form. It was humiliating for her, and I see now that it was the first time she learned to keep her best work folded inside her coat.

Tonight she had a roll of tracing paper under her arm. She unrolled it across the table between the raffle tickets and the custard creams, and there the girl was, older now, the same sweep of hair, the same dark shadow pressed hardest along the jaw and down the neck. The lower corner was scribbled over with heavy grey strokes that trailed off the edge of the sheet.

"You never finished the hair," I said. Gemma rolled the paper back up slowly. "I did," she said. "It just doesn't stop where the page does." Then she went to find her coat, and I watched the wet door swing shut behind her, the strands of the picture still blowing somewhere past the edge of the table.
