Two figures kissing in profile on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two figures in profile leaning towards each other to kiss, one with long flowing hair, drawn with loose, sketchy black outlines. The linework is light and varied in weight with no shading or colour, and the design fills the frame in a close crop. The fresh tattoo is covered with clear plastic wrap, and a patterned bag and light blue sheet sit in the background.

The band at the Winter Gardens plays the last waltz a third time because nobody has told them the hall is closing, and you are still sketching on the back of a chip-shop receipt, pencil moving fast because the couples will not hold still. Everything you draw tonight is a lean. Shoulders tip towards partners as if the floor has slipped a little, and you chase each angle before it goes.

You keep returning to the pair by the pillar. He is all sharp jaw and borrowed confidence, bending down to her as though he has practised the bend in a mirror. Her hair is loose to her waist after the quickstep, and she lifts her chin the half inch she has been refusing all evening. You abandon the rest of the room and follow them with your pencil, lines light and quick, because if you stop to shade anything the moment will be gone.

When the lights come up, he walks over to your table with his cap in his hands and asks whether you have drawn him. You turn the receipt round. He studies it for a long time, then taps the empty space beside the figures. Before you can answer, she has taken the pencil from behind your ear and is adding a stray curl across his cheek, the one she has been wanting to touch since March.
