Sleeping angel with wings on the inner wrist

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo shows a sleeping cherub with its head resting to one side, partly wrapped in a flowing ribbon, with feathered wings rising behind it. The linework is soft and the shading builds smooth tonal gradients across the figure, wings and fabric. The design is in black and grey only and sits centred on the inner forearm close to the wrist, with a blurred dark background behind the arm.

Dear Joan,

The Hallam order is finished, and I want to tell you about it before Mother hears it from Mrs Pike, who will have it wrong. Mrs Hallam came into the yard on Tuesday with a drawing she'd cut out of a Christmas card, a fat little cherub lying on a cloud with its head tipped sideways. She wanted it on the headstone for the boy who went through the ice on the mere in February. She didn't say so. She just laid the card on my bench and stood there in her gloves, waiting.

I'd been cutting lettering for three weeks and was sick of it, so I took the card home and drew the thing properly, with the ribbon knotted under its arm like a sheet somebody had pulled up and forgotten to smooth. I gave it wings, big ones, feathered at the tips. Then I went to carve it and found I couldn't get the face. Every version came out looking like a man's face or a doll's. On Thursday Danny cycled down the lane and fell asleep on the bench in the sun, mouth open, one hand under his cheek, and I had the chisel in one hand and the stone in front of me, and it just came.

Mrs Hallam came to see it on Saturday. She put her palm flat on the stone for a long while and said nothing. Then she asked whether the ribbon could be a bit looser, so it looked as if it might still slip off. I said it could.

Love to Harold and the girls. Tell Harold I've kept the good chisel for him.

Your brother, Frank
