Antlered rabbit with maple leaves on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A reddish-brown rabbit with a pale belly and white spots sits in profile, with large antlers rising from its head. Maple leaves, acorns and curling green vines frame the animal against a soft grey shaded background. Fine linework and gentle shading give the rabbit form, and warm reds, browns and greens dominate the colour palette.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every October the woodcutter's daughter Wren Haddow climbed the ridge with an empty basket, and every October the rabbit with the stag's antlers was waiting at the stile as though someone had sent for him. Her mother said he was a fox's trick. Her grandfather said he was older than the parish boundary and had shed those antlers from some proud buck before the church bell was ever cast.

The antlers were not the odd part, Wren thought. The odd part was the acorns. He never ate them. He rolled them one after another into a hollow under the oak roots and tucked maple leaves over the top, red as a robin's chest, until the hollow looked like a little kitchen someone had left in a hurry.

"What are you saving them for?" she asked the autumn her father's hands grew too stiff to split logs.

He looked at her with one dark eye and said nothing, which was his way. Then he nudged a single acorn toward her boot with his nose.

She carried it home and planted it behind the cottage where the frost had heaved the path. Winter came hard that year. When the ground softened in spring, a thin green stem pushed up with two leaves like cupped hands. Her father wept when he saw it, though he could not say why. Wren only smiled and walked back up to the stile, where a spotted rabbit with a crown of antlers sat in the grass, waiting for autumn to come round again.
