Rabbit with branch antlers in a teapot on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A rabbit with leafy branches growing from its head sits inside a blue teapot with a black lid and spout. A red rose with green leaves decorates the front of the teapot, and a red glow sits behind the rabbit. Bold black outlines define the shapes, and the shading is smooth and layered in warm browns, greens and blues.

Nobody in Coldharbour Lane could say when the hare first climbed into Mrs Pargeter's teapot, only that it was the blue one with the roses, the one kept for funerals and the vicar. She found it there on a Tuesday, curled on the tea cosy with its ears folded flat, and she said nothing for a full minute. Her husband later called it the most frightening silence he had ever heard come out of a kitchen.

The branches came after the hare drank from the spout. Nobody saw it happen, but twigs pushed out of its skull in the night like antlers that could not decide what they wanted to be, and by morning they were in leaf. Green leaves, shiny as new pennies. Mr Pargeter tried to pull one free and it bled sap onto his thumb, which he sucked and then eyed with suspicion for a week.
By the autumn fair the hare was famous. Mrs Pargeter sold sprigs from its crown to anyone who asked, wrapped in brown paper, and the vicar's wife swore a cutting had cured her husband's cough. The hare took its share of the coins in turnips and never once climbed out of the pot to collect them.
On the last night of the fair, the hare sat up in the blue teapot and looked at the painted rose on its side for a long while. Mrs Pargeter understood at last what it was asking for. She filled the kettle, dropped a handful of its leaves into the pot, and poured the water over them. The kitchen filled with the smell of rain on a hedge, and that was the first cup of tea anyone in the lane had ever drunk that tasted of spring.
