Fox with ferns and flowers on a thigh
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A red fox sits curled with its tail sweeping downward, framed by ferns, pink and yellow flowers and sprigs of foliage. The fox is shaded in orange, ginger and black with soft blended highlights, while the plant details use fine linework. A pale blue wash behind the fox adds depth to the circular composition.

Dear Marjorie,

The fox came back to the top field again on Tuesday, sitting in the bracken as if it had paid the rent. Father says the Hallam boys have been setting snares along the hedge, and I told him foxes don't read notices, but he didn't laugh. He's been out with the lamp every night since the hens went quiet.
I went up after supper with the bread heel for the birds and found the ferns already turning, the gold ones gone to rust at the edges, and little yellow flowers no bigger than a farthing scattered through them as if someone had dropped change. The fox was curled with its brush round its feet, watching me the way Mrs Pryce watches the vicar when he gets the hymn numbers wrong. Not afraid. Just deciding.
Here is the thing I haven't told anyone. Last week a wreath hung on the chapel door, woven of bracken and hips and that same yellow flower, and nobody would say who made it. Mrs Pryce said it was for the harvest, but harvest was in September. I think the fox has been bringing things to the gate. I think somebody in this village has been bringing them back.
I'm going up again on Sunday with a little dish of milk. If the fox is there I'll tell Father to leave the snares alone. If it isn't, I suppose I'll know which of us was watching whom.
Write soon, Edie
