Antlers, arrows and flowers pencil design
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing on white paper shows a pair of antlers curving outwards and upwards, with two arrows crossing horizontally below them and a cluster of small flowers at the centre. The linework is fine and sketchy, with light shading on the antler tines and the arrow shafts, and the flowers are outlined without shading. The image is entirely black and grey, and a handwritten note beneath the drawing reads "Color flowers?".

Dear Ada, the abbot has finally let me write to you without a censor's pencil marks, so I will be quick before the bell.

The stag came back to the lower orchard again last night. Brother Anselm says it is the same one that stood by the wall in March with its crown full of ivy, but he says many things after compline. I have seen it only at a distance. Its antlers are wider than the orchard gate and it moves as if it has forgotten it was ever hunted.
Old Gil, who was a ranger before he took his vows, sent me down with two arrows the abbot confiscated years ago. He said I was to bury them under the cloister wall as a warning. I did not. I laid them crosswise in the grass by the gate, shafts touching, and I picked the first primroses and the late crocus from the herb bed and tucked them where the fletching meets the wood. Gil saw me do it and said nothing, which from him is a blessing.
This morning the arrows were gone and the flowers were still there, crushed a little on one side by a hoof print that seemed to go around them rather than through. Brother Anselm says that proves nothing. I think it proves that someone in this house has finally made a choice that was not about killing. Tell Mother the bread is improving. Your loving brother, Thomas.
