Ornamental owl on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large owl with wide eyes, ear tufts and a patterned chest sits at the top of the design, with a dotted mandala or lotus-like motif below. The owl and surrounding scrollwork are drawn in fine black outlines, while the central motif is built from stippled dots that create soft shading. The design is shown in black ink only, set against a pale forearm on a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Queen wanted the owl's eyes closed for the wedding, so the guests would believe the palace was asleep. I told her the gate-owl of Serrenne had not shut its eyes in four hundred years, and she told me to paint what I was paid to paint. So I sat on the scaffold above the Lantern Gate with a tin of ink and a steel pin, and I began where the mandala begins, at the centre, with the lotus.

Dot by dot the petals rose out of the stone, each one a prick of the pin and each prick a breath I held. The lotus is the old sign of the river-keepers, who say its petals open only where something is watching. My master taught me that stippling is patience dressed as art. You do not draw a shadow. You make a thousand small ones and let the eye agree that it is there.

By dusk the scrollwork ran down both flanks like the river's own handwriting, and the breast feathers stood in a row of pointed leaves. I came to the eyes last. My hand shook, and I thought of the Queen and her command. Then the south tower bell rang the hour, the ear-tufts caught the lamplight, and I understood the joke. The owl was never a guardian of sleep. It was a guardian of whoever stays awake while the rest of the court dreams.

I left the eyes open. In the morning the Queen climbed the scaffold, studied the owl a long time, and said nothing. Then she handed me her own lantern and asked me to light it so she could see the gate from the hall. I did, and the whole court looked up to find the owl watching them back.
