The orchard above Porthkerris had been planted by a man who never lived to see it fruit, and every spring the blossom came down the slope like a slow tide. Mags Tullet kept the top gate and sold early apples from a handcart on the quay, and she had one rule for the boats: no man went out past the breakwater without a petal from the top tree tucked in his shirt.

Joss Venn ignored the rule in the spring the Bessie Lee went out with four hands and came back with three. He had laughed at the superstition in the Ship Inn, and at the wake he laughed again, though his hands shook on the glass. Mags said nothing. She only walked up the orchard path at dusk, filled her apron with fallen white and carried it down to the harbour wall, where she let the wind take every petal out over the black water.

The next morning the sea was flat and the wind came off the land. Joss saw the bloom drifting towards him in a long pale line, caught on the swell like a wake of snow, and it gathered round the stern of his skiff and held him steady until the tide turned him home. When he climbed the quay steps the blossom was still clinging to his knuckles, pink at the edges where it had bruised, and he did not laugh at anything again.
