Peony and bee sleeve on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A botanical arm piece of layered peony blooms, smaller buds and leaves, with a bee drawn near the top. The linework is fine and sketch-like, with soft grey shading that builds depth in the petals and leaves. The design runs vertically down the arm against a plain brick wall and grey fabric in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed packet had come from a dead woman's greenhouse in Hebden Bridge, and Maren had promised to keep the peonies alive until spring, which was the only promise she had made to anyone that winter. She kept the pages of the sketchbook flat under a jam jar of cold tea while she worked, pencilling the bloom she had only seen as a faded photograph on the cellar stairs. Outside the kitchen window the brick wall of the yard held the last light like a slab of warm bread.

The trouble was the bee. Every drawing she made of the big pale head came out too tidy, petals stacked like plates in a cupboard, and the old woman's letters had kept saying the same thing: let the flower look as if it is still opening. So Maren stopped trying to be neat. She let the outer petals curl back, let a bud sag on its stem, and when she finished the sheet she dropped a bee into the upper corner almost as an afterthought, a quick mark with the nib, its wings two strokes of grey.

Three nights later the first shoot broke through the compost, not a peony at all but a sprig of something sharp and green she could not name. She carried the pot to the window and pressed her thumb to the soil. Behind her the sketchbook lay open on the table, and when she turned to it the bee seemed to have shifted, to be looking down the page at the bud as if it had been waiting for someone to notice how quickly things came back.
