Aquarius water bearer zodiac design
Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of the Aquarius zodiac figure, a kneeling water bearer with a flowing garment and a raised arm, shown in profile. Below it is a bold black wave symbol with a curled tail and the word AQUARIUS in plain capital letters. The linework is uniform and solid, with no shading, and the composition is centred on a plain white background.

Dear Tom, the rain has come back to Sennick and the gutters on the chapel roof are running like the Sunday school jug, so I have stopped trying to keep the jug dry. You would laugh at me. I have gone out with the old enamel pail every evening since the bank failed and carried water up from the harbour steps the way you always said the lighthouse wanted it, two pails, no spilling, and the men at the chandlery think I've lost my wits.

Mrs Pargeter came down to the quay yesterday with her grandson's birthday cake in a tin, asking if the boats would be out Thursday. I told her the sea doesn't care for birthdays, and she said that was the first sensible thing anyone had said to her in a month. She also asked after the carved figure you kept on the windowsill, the kneeling one with the jug on its shoulder. I said it was in the box under the stairs. It is not in the box. I looked. The wave-mark you scratched on the lintel is still there, though, with its curl at the end like a tail that has changed its mind.
I went up the tower last night to see the lamp was trimmed and found the glass wet on the inside, which should not happen in a sealed room. There was a line of salt on the sill in the shape of a wave, and a little pool beside it that had gone cold. I did not mop it. I sat with the pail between my knees until the light came round, and I thought that if you are carrying water somewhere, Tom, you might as well pour it where it is needed, and I have decided that is here.
Come home when the tide turns. Bring the figure if you have it. I will leave the back door on the latch and the kettle hot.
Mary
