Mr Pringle from the chandlery says they've been at it since September, snorting and shouldering over the same doe, who sensibly took the coast road to Cullen. I told him the doe had the right idea. He said I'd been reading too many romances from the library, which is true, though I can't see the harm in it.

Where they had stood nose to nose, the tide had come up and smoothed everything except a shape left in the weed: two heads leaning in, their lower lines meeting in a point like a heart cut from slate. I stood there with the sacks getting heavy and thought of you across the water, and of how neither of us ever gave an inch either.

I'm enclosing the photograph Donal took with his good camera so you can see for yourself. Come home at Christmas if you can. The boats are all in and the harbour is quiet enough to hear the deer if you listen, and I'd like you to listen with me. Your loving sister, Eilidh.
