Black ink Arabic script lettering tattooed across the inner forearm, photographed with the arm raised against a gallery-style room.

Arabic script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single line of black Arabic script runs diagonally across the inner forearm, with flowing, calligraphic strokes and a small mark at the end. The lettering is solid black with slightly soft edges and no shading or colour. The arm fills most of the frame against a blurred background of wooden cabinets and framed artwork.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bakery shutter on Souk Street had been repainted so many times that its lettering stood up from the metal like raised scars. Old Samir set down his brush, wiped his fingers on a rag, and told me to stop squinting. "Read it slowly," he said. "Each word is a step. You cannot skip one."

I read it aloud and stumbled over the joins. Three words ran together in one sweeping line that dipped and rose above the awning like a swallow crossing a yard. He had painted it the winter after the flood took the widow's oven and her husband's good coat. She had asked for something that would outlast her grief. Samir told her paint could not do that, but a sentence could be read again, and it would still say the same thing on the thousandth reading as on the first.

He showed me how the strokes thinned where the hand had lifted and thickened where it had pressed. Every mark had been decided, he said, and none of them hurried. The little stop at the end was the last thing he ever added, because a word is only finished once you have decided to leave it alone.

The rain came back while we talked. Samir pulled the shutter down over the trays of bread, and the three words faced the empty street, dark and wet and perfectly level.
