The reed pen had split again, and Yusra sat with the little knife across her knees while the ink dried on the board. Her master, old Jalal, did not look up from the ledger he was copying for the grain merchant. He said only that a split pen was not a failed pen, merely one that had been asked to carry too much ink at once.

She tried the line again on a scrap of paper in the margin, the way he had taught her, letters thin and even and leaning forward like people walking into wind. Her first word came out fat. Her second wandered off the edge. She counted each failure aloud, because counting was easier than listening to the river going past the window. On the fourth try the letters held their spacing and she almost smiled, then felt the nib catch and drag a blot across the page.

The merchant arrived in the afternoon, shaking the sheet she had ruined, shouting that his accounts were a joke. Jalal took the paper from him, turned it to the light, and tapped the bottom of the page where Yusra's blot had landed in a neat round pool. Look, he said, the pen wrote its last word and then stopped, and that stop is where the lesson sits. The merchant grumbled, but he did not tear the sheet. He folded it into his sleeve, and Yusra saw him pause at the stain before he went back out into the sun.
