Armoured warriors with spear on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey tattoo covers the forearm, showing a winged-helmet warrior standing behind an armoured woman who holds her chest, with a long spear held in front of her. Smooth shading and fine detail give the figures a sculpted, realistic look, and the robes and armour are rendered in soft greys. Dark flame-like shading at the base and a muted backdrop frame the figures, and the photo is taken indoors against a wooden floor.

Dear Ilse, the pour went wrong again on Thursday, and I am writing with my hands still smelling of scorched wax. The spear-bearer cooled with a crack along the shin, and Mr Harrow has told the council she will be a shadow of her drawing unless we recast. He wants her set higher on the plinth so the messenger's wings catch the morning light. I told him the wings were never the trouble. It is the woman. She keeps turning her face towards the helmet, and however often I file the brow, she looks away from the square.

You asked why I did not carve her from stone. Stone would have kept her quiet. I modelled her from the hands of Nell Ashby, who sweeps the furnace floor, and who held her own chest against the February draught for the whole of one afternoon without once complaining. The messenger I took from the sketch you sent, the one with the feathered crest, though I gave him your brother's stubborn jaw, which you will forgive me for.
Tonight I poured the last of it with the doors open to the wind. The flames came up through the base the way they do, blue first and then orange, and for one breath the whole figure was lit from underneath. Harrow saw nothing but smoke. I saw her turn her face the rest of the way round, at last, to the man beside her.
Come up in spring and see her before the council moves her. Burn this letter after, I beg you. Yours, Arthur.
