Warrior woman with sword and dragons on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A woman warrior with dark eye makeup and beaded jewellery holds a long sword over her shoulder, wearing a dark top and wrap. Two dragons coil across her midriff, and the shading is smooth with strong contrast. The figure fills the frame on the outer thigh against a pale background.

Gideon wanted the dragons on her middle, and I told him a banner has no middle, only canvas and wind. He leaned on my ladder anyway, chewing a matchstick, and said the Warrior Queen of the Eastern Mile had to look the way the crowd remembered her: sword over one shoulder, kohl run down her cheeks as if she had cried since Tuesday, and two dragons coiled round her waist so the children would shriek and the mothers would pay twice.

I had painted her for nine summers. The sword was my signature, a long slash of silver that caught the lamps at dusk and never once tore in the wind. Marguerite, who threw knives on the Tuesday bill, had sat for the face in her caravan behind the helter-skelter. She told me a warrior paints her own eyes before a battle and then forgets to wipe them after, and I put that in without asking whether it was a compliment.
The dragons were the trouble. Gideon had hired a lad from the coconut stalls to ink them, a boy with a fine hand and a worse temper, and when the paint dried I saw that the scales had little hooked letters tucked into the spines. Pia. Pia. Pia. Gideon's daughter had run off with the boy at Skegness, and the banner had carried her name round the country for a month without anyone reading it.
We struck the tent in October. I rolled the canvas myself, face inward, so the queen's dark eyes would not see the road, and I left the sword end poking out of the back of the lorry like a question nobody wanted to ask. Gideon never mentioned the dragons again, though every night he touched that spot on the banner with two fingers, the way a man checks his pocket for a ticket he has already spent.
