Armoured warrior with spear and bird on a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo covers most of the upper back, showing an armoured figure with a spear in a classical style, with a winged bird above and a dark, smoky background. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine modelling in the armour, drapery and feathers. The image is entirely black and grey, arranged in a vertical composition that follows the curve of the back.

The eagle has been circling the pass since before dawn, and you have stopped trying to read its meaning. Your father used to say birds only watch the ones who are already dying, which is the sort of thing a man says when he has run out of other comfort. Below you the smoke from the burned waggons lies thick along the gully floor, and the road to Harrow Gap is a grey thread through it.

Iris comes up the scree at a crouch, her shield on her back, the bronze boss dented where a Vennish axe caught it at the ford. She does not ask whether you are afraid. She asks where the spear is, and you show her the ash shaft lying across the rocks, the iron head still bright. Carry it, she says. The ridge will hold one of us, and she has never been the kind to be held.

You go up the north side together, your boots slipping on wet shale, the smoke tearing open and closing again like a curtain in wind. At the top the enemy line waits on the far slope, and in the middle of it a single man in a plumed helm lifts his hand. Nobody moves. The eagle drops a little lower, as if it has decided.

Then you throw. The spear leaves your hand true and the bird goes up in a clatter of wings, and for one breath the whole pass is silent except for the rattle of Iris's shield strap. She laughs, short and surprised, and steps out onto the open rock where the whole valley can see her.
