A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fletcher's girl had been told twice not to rush the glue, and so when the wind came off the marsh that morning it took the second feather straight from her fingers and carried it out over the reeds. She watched it go, turning like a leaf that had forgotten which tree it came from.

Old Hesketh did not shout. He took the bare shaft from the bench, sighted down it against the window, and handed it to her with the iron point already bound on. "Then this one flies with one wing," he said. "Mind the bow, not the wind."

She shot it at noon at the boar that had been raiding the orchard walls. The arrow went low and wide, struck the gatepost of the lord's yard, and dropped into the ditch, where the boar stood over it, snuffed at the fletching, and walked off unhurt. The lord laughed. Hesketh did not.

That evening she waded the ditch to fetch it back and found the morning's feather caught in the reeds beside the shaft, dry and whole, its barbs combed straight as if someone had preened it. She laid it against the broken arrow and the two fitted together like a hand closing. She bound the feather beneath the shaft with waxed thread, left the boar's tracks in the mud behind her, and went home to try again in the morning.
