Two feathers on a cord on the ankle
Realism · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two feathers hanging from a cord, with a small red bead and silver-toned beads at the top. The feathers have dark linework and grey shading that gives them depth and soft texture. The red bead is the only colour, set against pale skin and a dark textured background.

Your grandfather's vice is still bolted to the bench in the back room, Tom, and I haven't had the heart to move it. Yesterday I finally sat down with it because the shop bell has gone quiet and the rent does not stop for quiet. The Hexham anglers have been asking for grey partridge hackles again, and there is a box of them under the window, dry as old bread.

I found the old cord in the drawer where he kept the odds and ends: waxed linen, the colour of weak tea, with a red glass bead he bought off a stall in Newcastle the summer you were born. He used to say a bead at the top stops the feathers from fraying and gives the eye somewhere to rest. I tied two wings on, one darker than the other, the way he showed me, and threaded on the silver beads from the tin he never sold. It hung off the edge of the bench looking like it was waiting for a boat.
The strange part was how easily it came back. My fingers knew the half hitch before my head did. I kept expecting to be cross with myself for getting the set wrong, but the feathers lay down the way he always said they should, slanting toward the light, and after a while I stopped worrying about it at all.
I'm sending it with this letter. Don't wear it fishing. Just keep it somewhere you'll see it, and when the Tyne goes grey in February, look at the red bead and remember he was never much good at letters either. Your loving mum, Jean.
