The crate smelled of cedar and linseed, and Tomas lifted the lid with the end of his pen rather than his fingers, as though the contents might bite. Forty-one shafts lay in neat rows, fletched in the drab greens the archery club on the far bank had ordered. The forty-second rode alone in the corner. Its three feathers were banded yellow, maroon and white, and its spearhead was grey steel, worn faintly bright at the edges.

"Not on the manifest," he said.

Marta shrugged from the bench by the scales. Her boots were still wet from the ford road. "My grandmother fletched that one. It was never meant for sale."

"Then what is it for?"

"It goes back to the man who taught her to shoot. He's on the other side now, and he asked for it."

Tomas counted the feathers with his pen tip, one, two, three, the way his father had counted sheep through the gate. The customs form had a box for goods of personal value, and he had never once ticked it honestly. He thought about the rope ferry that stopped running after the flood, and how long two villages could go on sending each other nothing but paperwork.

He wrote a single line on the sheet, initialled it, and set the arrow back in the corner with the feathers facing up, the way it had come. "Take it," he said. "Tell him the wind on the bridge is still bad, but the gate opens at nine." Marta lifted the arrow, and the steel head caught the light from the window, and for a moment it looked like something that could cross anything.
